Abstract

A mathematical analysis that predicts the leakage parameters of diffraction gratings based on D-shaped fiber as a function of fiber and grating parameters is presented. The development approximates the elliptical fiber core with a rectangular dielectric waveguide. The effective-index method is used to transform the waveguide into an equivalent slab waveguide, and the leakage parameter of the grating is determined by using an approximate approach. A discussion of the relation between grating characteristics and waveguide parameters is presented.
