Abstract
Analytic results are derived for the phase-rate autocorrelation associated with the photocurrent comprising the output of a reference-beam laser Doppler velocimeter when the motion of the scattering particles is a superposition of Brownian motion and uniform flow. It is shown that the result is critically dependent on a modification of the standard result for mean-square Brownian motion drift. The limit of pure Brownian motion is also examined, and it is shown that there is agreement with published experimental results [ J. Opt. Soc. Am. A 4, 1220 ( 1987)]. A generalization of a classical result in FM detection theory is worked out and shown to be required when both types of motion are present.
