Abstract

The effect of the metal-cladding thickness on the guided-mode optical characteristics of the asymmetric metal-clad four-layer waveguide is analyzed by a simplified method, and the expressions for the propagation constant and the absorption loss coefficient are derived for the TE modes. For the air/Au/GaAs/AlGaAs waveguides the results computed from this method are in good agreement with the numerical results of the mode complex transcendental eigenvalue equation, except in the regions near mode cutoff.
