Abstract

Van Meeteren and Valeton [ J. Opt. Soc. Am. A 5, 438 ( 1988)] recently reported sine-wave detection threshold elevations due to noise that were much larger than those of previous authors. This disagreement may be a result of technical factors such as a lack of a phase reference signal and a short display time.
