Abstract

The theory of speckle reduction by compounding signal intensities from multiple correlated phased arrays is developed and then applied specifically to synthetic aperture radar (SAR). Correlated subarrays are obtained from a large coherent phased array by division into subarrays after coherent signal detection. Overlapping subarrays share common elements. A model of SAR suitable for coherence analysis is used to calculate the matrix elements of the covariance matrix for the correlated arrays. The results are coupled with statistical analyses of compounded systems to calculate the first-order speckle statistics for spatially compounded multiple correlated phased arrays. Extensions of this work to fixed phased array systems in radar and ultrasound are dicussed but are not calculated in detail.
