Abstract
This paper is a continuation of a study [ P. Mazur and D. L. Mills, J. Appl. Phys. 54, 3735 ( 1983)] on the influence of surface roughness on the attenuation length of electromagnetic waves guided by a dielectric cylinder. In the first paper we considered surface roughness that had azimuthal symmetry around the axis of the cylinder and found that, in the limit when the wavelength of the radiation is much smaller than the radius of the cylinder, the attenuation coefficient is inversely proportional to the wavelength cubed. We find in this study that the introduction of an azimuthal dependence in the surface roughness does not change the wavelength dependence at all in the same limit. For an arbitrary value of λ/R differences will occur. In this case, extensive numerical calculations are necessary to delineate these differences.
