Eigenmode expansions using biorthogonal functions: complex-valued Hermite–Gaussians: reply to comment

Abstract

We appreciate Seshadri’s interest in our work [J. Opt. Soc. Am. A 14, 1780 (1997) ] and agree that his alternative expression for the quadrature expansion coefficients is mathematically equivalent to our original formulation in terms of Legendre functions. We note, however, that all of our results, especially those showing nonconvergence of the quadrature expansion, remain unchanged and fully correct using either his formulation or ours. Using his formulation we can, in fact, derive even more serious nonconvergence properties for the quadrature expansion. The alternative “minimum-error” procedure developed in our paper remains, we believe, a valid and preferred way to handle biorthogonal eigenmode expansions.
