Theory and experiments on diffraction patterns of an optical fiber with slight ellipticity: a perturbation method

Abstract

A perturbation method is developed to calculate intensity distributions (diffraction patterns) of light diffracted from an optical fiber. The slight ellipticity of the fiber core is taken into consideration. The refractive index and the sizes of the fiber are recovered from a least-squares fit that matches the measured diffraction patterns with the calculated ones.
