Effective optical properties of heterogeneous media in the local-field approximation

Abstract

A new model for the determination of the linear effective-medium dielectric function of heterogeneous media in the local-field approximation is presented. The new model is applicable to a spatially uniform distribution of inhomogeneities. Interaction between constituents with different optical properties is achieved by exploiting Onsager’s form of the local field. Comparison with existing theories shows that the new model exhibits correct behavior in the case of an insulator–metallic-particle composite at high volume-filling fractions of metallic components.
