Editor's Picks Collection: Diffraction Gratings

To honor OSA's centennial, JOSA A Centennial Editor Bahaa Saleh selected articles from a variety of topic areas that reflect the progression of each area over the journal's history. Below is a collection of articles in the area of Diffraction Gratings.

Note that this selection of articles is not meant to be exhaustive but authoritative, showing that significant contributions were made and continue to be made in this area.

Introduction

I am very excited to introduce another collection of classic JOSA and JOSA A articles compiled by our Centennial Editor, Bahaa Saleh. This collection focuses on diffraction gratings, a subject that goes to the heart of the power of Fourier methods, that finds applications in spectroscopy and sensing, and that crosses multiple disciplines. The first paper, a 1962 JOSA article by C. B. Burckhardt, deals with thick diffraction gratings made using lasers and laser-based holographic techniques, both still less than a decade old at the time. Indeed the first reference in that paper is the seminal 1962 Leith-Upatnieks paper first presenting off-axis holography. As gratings become thick and then two- and three-dimensional they exhibit band structure analogous to that seen in semiconductor electronics. This progression from gratings to photonic crystals caps our list with the 2000 JOSA A article by Gralak, Enoch and Tayeb. Every paper in this collection is a classic, and moreover, the papers cited therein represent some of the best work in optics.
