Abstract

Fast primary mirrors offer the possibility of using endostructure designs rather than the conventional exostructure designs. A parametric analysis indicates that considerable cost savings can be achieved in this manner for large optical telescopes. f/1 endostructures are compared with classical and quasi-classical f/2.75 exostructure telescopes. The multiple mirror telescope configuration is the lowest-cost design for equal aperture area, but when equal light is considered, it is comparable with the segmented monolith design.
