Abstract

A spherical target symmetrically irradiated and imploded by a multibeam laser system can be a powerful source of spectra of highly ionized atoms. The high density achieved at peak compression (Ne ~ 1024 cm−3) permits fast ionization to high-charge states. We report here on the observation of new lines of Xe xliv, xlv, xlvi, and xlvii in the range of 2.5–3.0 Å from xenon-filled glass microballoons imploded with the six-beam 2 TW-ZETA laser system. Classification of these lines was done with the aid of a Hartree–Fock relativistic calculation. Tables of wavelengths and oscillator strengths are given.
