Abstract

Nonlinear effects due to the recording process introduce quantitative errors in the determination of the fringe location of holographic interferometric displays. The effect of these errors is analyzed for configurations based on double-exposure holographic recordings. Single reference and two-reference-beam configurations are investigated, the latter for the heterodyne case (a frequency shift is introduced between the two reference beams in the reconstruction process) as well as for the homodyne case. A detailed analysis of nonlinear recording effects on the interpretation of data in holographic interferometry shows that only in high-resolution holographic interferometry where the fringe location is very accurately determined by electronic means is the nonlinear effect appreciably affecting the results.
