Abstract
The oscillator strength of the 6s6p 1P1–6s5d 1D2 transition in barium has been inferred from the efficiency of laser deflection of an atomic beam. The result, f ≤ 0.0034, is a large correction to the previously accepted experimental value of f = 0.1, although it agrees reasonably well with recent theoretical work.
