Abstract
Recent discussions of optical resolving power are given in terms of the eigenfunctions of the integral equation describing the image formation process. The elegant mathematics tends to hide the nature of the physical process and also deters readers with limited mathematical experience. This paper attempts to remedy the situation by discussing resolution in terms of conventional Fourier theory only.
