Efficiency limitations imposed by thermodynamics on optical coupling in fiber-optic data links

Abstract

Thermodynamic arguments are invoked to demonstrate that no optically passive optical system can be employed to effect an increase of radiance. This principle is then applied to several specific cases to determine the maximum coupling efficiency that can be achieved between an optical fiber and other components of an optical data link.
