Abstract

An achromatic focusing assembly that uses two plane mirrors and one spherical mirror was designed and built to focus Fabry–Perot interference patterns onto the entrance slit of a stigmatic spectrograph. The various imaging errors are so small, and the device is so simple and inexpensive to make, that it may have wide applicability to other areas of optics, where it could easily replace very expensive achromatic lenses. We discuss the design and calculate numerical values for the blur circles due to astigmatism, coma, and spherical aberration.
