The dimensionless parameter ηa vs the dimensionless parameter Vi for a linear tapered fiber. ηa is the average fraction of HE11 modal power propagating within the fiber. V i = π d i { n 1 2 n 2 2 } 1 2 / λ, where di is the diameter of the fiber at its input end, n1 and n2 are the refractive indices of the fiber and its surrounding medium, respectively, and λ is the wavelength of light in vacuum. The curve labelled 1 is for a fiber of constant diameter, whereas that labelled ∞ is for a fiber that tapers to a point.
