Adaptation to a masking stimulus

Abstract

After prolonged viewing of a moving pattern, both the brightness of a moving line and its masking effectiveness were reduced. Reduction of the luminance of the moving line by an amount equal to the apparent dimming of brightness produced an equivalent decrease of masking effectiveness.
