Abstract

A model is developed and fitted to the observed infrared transmittance and reflectance of a layer of gold black in the wavelength region 3–100 μm. Absorption coefficient and reflectivity are calculated and interpreted. The parameter values employed in the model are compatible with the existing information on the structure of gold blacks, the properties of bulk gold, and the expected modifications of these properties by size effects.
