Abstract

Bartleson and Breneman have recently proposed that the primary criterion for optimum photographic tone reproduction is 1:1 reproduction of brightnesses proportional to white. The validity of this criterion has been examined by comparing its predictions of the quality of projected transparencies with those from an independent study by Clark, in which the relations between stimulus characteristics and quality were derived. The agreement is excellent.
