Abstract

The absorption spectrum between 4500 and 3800 Å of the triplet–triplet transition of perdeuteronaphthalene dissolved in polymethylmethacrylate has been studied at pressures as great as 40 kbar. The energies of the absorption maxima of this transition decrease with increasing pressure, and, between 7 and 40 kbar, the decrease is approximately linear with pressure at the rate −15±1 cm−1/kbar. This rate is about twice as great as the rate at which the fluorescence and phosphorescence of perdeuteronaphthalene in polymethylmethacrylate shift with pressure.
