Large-Field Color Matching and Adaptation

Abstract

The large-field color-matching functions of one observer have been measured at a high level by Maxwell’s method, and at high and low photopic levels by the maximum-saturation method. The chromaticities of 20 non-monochromatic test stimuli were determined by both methods of observation, and by calculation from the three sets of functions. Significant differences were found between the results of the various methods, and between calculated and observed chromaticities. A breakdown of Grassmann’s laws for large-field color matches is inferred. The nonadditivities depend upon the chromaticity and illuminance of the colorimeter field, but the exact cause has not been elucidated.
