Effective Refractive Index as a Criterion of Performance of Interference Filters

Abstract

The performance of narrow-band interference filters for light incident over a range of angles is examined and defined in a general way on the basis of a calculation of the transmitted flux. The performance of a filter, which is the product of its flux-collection efficiency and its resolving power, is equal to the product of the square of the effective refractive index and the peak transmittance. This result is used to indicate how the basic design parameters and operating conditions of filters should be chosen.
