Abstract
Relationships are obtained which relate the longitudinal magneto-optic Kerr reflection coefficient |K|2 to the visibility of the magnetic image structure, the average irradiance, and the background irradiance. The angle at which |K|2 is maximum depends only on the complex refractive index of the material. Graphical solutions to the problem and an accurate method for measuring |K|2 are given. Results for an evaporated iron film at λ = 0.558 μ are n = 1.65(1 + 1.20i), |Q|2 = 1.96 × 10−4, and |K|2 = 3.77 × 10−7, 7.50 × 10−7, 9.43 × 10−7, and 5.95 × 10−7 at θ = 30°, 45°, 60°, and 75°, respectively.
