Photometry of Precessing Cylinders

Abstract

In a previous paper a general theory was developed for computing the irradiance from a precessing torse as a function of time. This theory is applied here to the special case of a cylinder. The power spectrum of the irradiance is computed and compared with experiment for the case where the cylinder is illuminated with parallel light and precesses about a fixed axis. The power spectrum is plotted as a function of the phase angle. The irradiance as a function of time for a given value of the phase angle is also computed and compared with experiment. Finally, the implications of rigid-body dynamics are discussed.
