Abstract

This paper applies the methods of ray tracing to the evaluation of aberrations produced by holograms approaching the limit of the binomial expansion. The position of the image plane yielding minimum geometrical distortions and the magnitude of the distortions in this optimum plane are calculated as functions of geometry and wavelength ratio for magnifications of 2 and 4 and for three different numerical apertures. From these data, the performance and geometry of the optimum system of a particular numerical aperture and magnification are determined. The image quality is found to deteriorate rapidly as we move from these optimum systems. Least sensitivity to changes in object placement is found at points where the magnification is approximately λreproducingrecording. The quality of the geometric image increases with increasing recording-laser-to-hologram distance and with decreasing numerical aperture.
