Transfer Functions and Total Illuminance of High Numerical Aperture Systems Obeying the Sine Condition

Abstract

The transfer function for incoherent illumination and total illuminance is evaluated for high numerical-aperture systems obeying the sine condition. The influence of third-order spherical aberration and defocusing on the Strehl criterion is studied. Transfer functions for spherical aberration and defocusing in the “plane of best focus” are presented. Both circular and slit apertures are considered.
