Abstract

This paper describes a new type of fluorescent lamp which is brighter than any previous fluorescent lamp. A major part of the light emitted from the phosphor is radiated through a narrow, transparent aperture. The gain is effected entirely by multiple reflections within the lamp, without requiring any additional power input. The paper presents the fundamental integral equations for interflections within the lamp and their solution in an important special case. Graphs of photometric characteristics illustrate the potentialities of aperture lamps. Data are also presented on the characteristics of experimental aperture lamps.
