Abstract
Infrared polarizers have been fabricated by placing a large number of glass plates coated with selenium in parallel. The aperture is 12 cm×9 cm. The beam is reflected two or four times in the apparatus and exits in the same direction as that of the incident beam. When the incident beam is not perfectly parallel and has the maximum obliquity of 0.05 rad, the degree of polarization obtained by two reflections on the selenium surfaces is measured to be 99.9%, while the theoretical value is 99.98%. For an ordinary use, a single reflection by selenium will be sufficient and the aluminized surface may be substituted for the remaining reflection. In this case, greater intensity of emergent beam can be obtained at 99.5% degree of polarization.
