Shape of an Emission Line of CH Produced in an Oxyacetylene Flame

Abstract

Interferometric measurements were made of the contour of an emission line at λ4226A produced by an oxyacetylene flame. This emission line is produced by the K-19 Rdc(0,0)2Δ−2π transition of the CH molecule. The line contour was observed by direct photoelectric intensity measurement of the interferometer pattern. It has been found that the line contour and half-width is not consistent with Doppler broadening at any reasonable temperature. It must be concluded that very large collision broadening must be present in the CH flame thus making the determination of a translational temperature difficult. However the existence of a large amount of collision broadening would seem to show that a high probability of rotational equilibrium exists.
