Abstract

An electrodeless discharge tube was mounted as a section of the inner conductor of a tuneable length of coaxial line. This made possible essentially perfect matching between the oscillator and the light source tube and permitted operation in a cavity of small diameter, a feature of particular importance where the light source needs to run between the poles of an electromagnet. To avoid the wastage of power incurred when an attenuator is placed between the oscillator and the load, the oscillator was protected by a cutoff relay activated by reflected power. The maximum intensity obtained for the Hg 5461 A line was 0.025 watt/cm2/steradian under conditions for which the line, although wider than 1010 cps, looked sharp when observed visually through a spectroscope. Under conditions for which the width was 8×103 cps an intensity of 0.004 watt/cm2/steradian was observed.
