Determination of Dissymmetry of Scattering in Colored Solutions

Abstract

The measured dissymmetry of scattered light in colored solutions must be corrected for light absorption. This correction arises because the path length of the light is on the average greater in the forward than in the backward direction. The correction has been calculated for angles of 45° and 135° to the incident beam. The result is a function of optical path length, width of incident beam, width of aperture at the light receiver, and absorption coefficient.

A set of measurements of dissymmetry of light scattering has been conducted using a solution of polystyrene in toluene with Azoflavine S as a coloring agent. The experimental results agree with the calculation within the limits of expected error.
