Abstract

The Zeeman effects of Au i and Au ii have been investigated in the region of λλ 2400 A to 6500 A for a magnetic field strength of about 38 000 gauss. The work of Symons and Daley has been confirmed and somewhat extended for Au i. Unfortunately, most of the Au ii patterns were triplets and hence of little value. Some doubt is cast on existing classification of Au ii by the persistent appearance of the lines λλ 5354, 5380, and 5427 which come out as strong, well-resolved patterns on the plates, so that g and J values could be found. These lines are members of a multiplet, the transitions occurring between levels J=0, 1, 2 and the level J=1, g=1.78.
