Abstract

The autocorrelation functions of the light intensities in stellar shadow bands have been determined for two nights in March, 1954. These functions show that the stellar shadow bands are correlated over a distance of eleven inches, the limit to which observations were made; that the predominant element size is of the order of 5 to 10 in.; and that the pattern elements are elongated in the direction of motion of the pattern. The pattern appears to have a translational motion which correlates both in direction and magnitude with atmospheric wind velocities in the neighborhood of the 200 mb level.
