Abstract

A process has been developed by which boric acid containing an organic substance as a minor constituent, can be melted and super-cooled to form a homogeneous glass under controlled vapor pressure of water. This technique assures the attainment of a reproducible fluidity of the melt. The total water content of the glass has been determined to be about 10 percent by weight. Plates of the glass having dimensions of 1×20×40 mm were routinely prepared. These remained highly transparent for several weeks in a vacuum desiccator.
