An Analysis of the Factors in Spectrochemical Microanalysis

Abstract

Microanalytical apparatus has been designed and constructed for the purpose of the study of diffusion in metals and alloys and the analysis of segregates and inclusions. Versatility in changing photographic plate and sample speeds was included in the design. Based on mechanical considerations, the relative importance of factors, such as size of sparked area, lengths of spectrograph and microphotometer slits and the ratio of plate speed to sample speed are discussed. The width of the sparked area was 0.6 mm and uniform. Calculations of apparent concentration were performed to verify the experimental discrimination factors. The most important factor was found to be the width of the sparked area. No advantage was seen in using a speed ratio greater than 10:1.
