Variation in the Horizontal Distribution of Light from Candlepower Standards

Abstract

A recording goniophotometer was used to measure the luminous intensity around the horizontal plane for several types of lamps used as working standards of candlepower. It was found that variations in the intensity of the light in a few degrees of arc could sometimes lead to an error much greater than the supposed error in the calibration of such lamps. Of those tested it was found that the lamps most suitable for use as working standards of candlepower have relatively large spherical or conical bulbs and well-supported filaments.
