The Electrical Properties of Selenium Coatings

Abstract

The dark conductivity and photo-conductivity of thin vacuum coated selenium layers were measured. The results indicate that with coating temperatures below 50°C only vitreous selenium is formed, whereas at higher temperatures the formation of monoclinic selenium is favored. Also, the inception of crystalline structure was found microscopically at about 50°C. From the rectifier properties of the layers, it can be deduced that the conduction in the vitreous selenium is chiefly of the P-type, whereas the monoclinic allotropic form displays N-type conduction.
