Drawing A shows one of the mirrors of a Fabry-Perot interferometer. The deposit, D, is a dielectric with a thickness of approximately one-tenth the wave-length of the sodium D-lines. Drawing B shows the double set of fringes in coincidence; C and D show them separated in a manner such that some of the fringes are continuous across the boundary of the deposit D.
