Measurement of Faraday Effect and Cotton-Mouton Effect Using Transient Magnetic Fields and a Photo-Multiplier-Type Compensator

Abstract

A photoelectric apparatus is described which measures approximately the Faraday effect and Cotton-Mouton effect in transparent substances in transient magnetic fields, and indicates directly upon an oscilloscope. The apparatus was used to determine the dispersion curve of the Verdet constant in the visible region for methacrylate polymer, styrene monomer, allyl diglycol carbonate monomer, and toluene; and to determine the Cotton-Mouton constant of nitrobenzene.
