Abstract
A study has been made of the dependence of the peak intensity and the duration of the visible light, from arcs of a few microseconds duration in xenon, krypton, and argon, on the input energy, the circuit characteristics, the gas, and the pressure. With input energies up to about 6 joules per discharge, peak currents ranging from a few hundred up to nearly 5000 amperes have been recorded and the relation between the current and the intensity and duration of the light is specified. The dependence of both the current and the arc resistance upon several variables is discussed.
