Abstract

The need for a systematic design and tolerance analysis of optical systems arises from the demand for better optical systems manufactured more economically. Methods are presented for obtaining the optimum design possible with a given type of system using Design Analysis (DA), and for specifying optical and related mechanical tolerances for most economical manufacture using Tolerance Analysis (TA). First-order Design and Tolerance Analysis (D&TA) controls the Gaussian first-order optical dimensions such as EFL, BF, f/number, etc. Third-order D&TA controls the third-order aberrations. A simple extension of the procedure will take care of higher order aberrations.
