  1. We need not be concerned here with the 180° phase change, which is due to one of the reflections taking place in a rare medium against a dense medium. The accepted procedure in the optical shop is to count the Newton rings out from the center of the pattern, counting only those that have the same color as the "bull's eye." Thus, for a maximum air-space thickness less than 10-5 mm (and yet not in optical contact) we observe no change from the center out, and so although from our theory we know that there is actually interference taking place, we say there are zero rings ("all one color").
