Abstract

A convenient apparatus is described for making refractive index measurements on a 60° prism, in the near infrared region. The instrument is essentially a double Wadsworth mirror monochromator, the first half being calibrated in wave-lengths, and the second half calibrated to read angular rotations of the prism table on which the unknown prism is mounted. The wave-length drum was calibrated by working backwards from a known prism (rocksalt or quartz) mounted on the second prism table. Measurements on eleven optical glasses are given, from 0.365 to 2.6μ.
