The rotation of the upper disk produces corresponding changes in the parallel-lever mechanism to which the elements of the test-object are attached. This parallel-bar test-object is thus alterable in size without changes in geometrical form.

The rotation in opposite directions of two glass plates ruled with parallel opaque lines produces dark bands across the face of the test-object. As the angular displacement between the two sets of parallel-lines is increased the number of dark bands increases and the width of the bands decreases. In this illustration, the number of parallel-lines is less than in the actual apparatus for reasons of simplicity and clearness.
