Abstract
The laser power threshold for the forward- and back-scattered Q1(1) and S0(1) stimulated Raman lines from H2 gas in the pressure range 4–40 amagats was measured for the focused-beam geometry. This work was undertaken to obtain quantitative data on the threshold power in the neighborhood of Dicke narrowing zones, and to determine the relationship between the threshold-power behavior and theoretical gains for the focused-laser-beam configuration. Our results indicate a strong dependence of the S0(1) line on laser polarization; the threshold power is a minimum for a circularly polarized beam. Threshold powers for the Q1(1) were similar for both linearly and circularly polarized laser light. The density dependence of the threshold power for both of the stimulated Raman lines was observed to be identical in both forward and backward directions. The predicted behavior of the threshold power is compared with the observed data.
