A typical result showing a wavelength change. Note that the finer rings appear to expand from top to bottom, the coarser lateral rings contract. Thus there must be a skipped order. The actual shifts must be in the ratio 15.01/8.66, the ratio of the étalon lengths. Orders are added or subtracted to the exact fractions until a concordant pair of shifts has been obtained.
