Abstract

The optical properties of silver chloride at room temperature have been determined in the energy range 2–21 eV by means of reflectivity measurements. In addition to the first reflection peak at 4.7 eV, a pronounced peak at 7.1 eV, lesser peaks at 10.6 and 13.2 eV, and shoulders at 6.0 and 8.2 eV were observed. The reflectivity decreased monotonically for energies greater than 14.0 eV. A Kramers-Kronig analysis was employed to calculate the phase shift on reflection and the resulting optical constants. Vacuum-ultraviolet spectra of <i>R</i>, α, <i>n</i>, κ, ∊<sub>1</sub>, and ∊<sub>2</sub> of silver chloride are given for the first time. Details of these measurements and calculations, and tentative interpretations of the observed structure are explained.
