Suggested Arrangement of Mirrors to Form Multiple Reference Angles

Abstract

A reference angle is described that forms, by successive or multiple reflections, a multiplicity of equal optical angles having common vertices. This angle may be used as a standard for calibrating circular scales either with an autocollimator or an interferometer. The angle can be adjusted in an interferometer to a very high accuracy. If the faces of the mirrors are 6 in. long, an error of 0.1 fringe corresponds to an error in the angle of 0.02 sec of arc.
